SALT LAKE CITY — The three people involved in a brief car chase from Salt Lake International Airport and a fatal car accident were identified Tuesday.

Three people were killed in the accident and one man was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The victims were identified Tuesday as Randy Ruiz, 14, from Midvale, Hardinger Cruz, 17, from Salt Lake City and Michaela Martin, 18, from Taylorsville.

The chase began just after 5 a.m. Saturday at the airport when a car was observed speeding while leaving the parking garage. An airport officer pursued the car onto I-80, but was told to call off the chase, according to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Jeff Nigbur.

However, as the officer was driving back to the airport, he noticed a cloud of dust. Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Larry Mower said the vehicle had rolled several times before landing on its roof in the weeds off of the side of I-80.

The investigation with the accident is still ongoing and more information will be posted as it becomes available.
