PARK CITY — A documentary giving an in-depth look into Mitt Romney’s two presidential campaigns will premier at the Sundance Film Festival and be released shortly after on Netflix.
“Mitt”, directed by Greg Whiteley (“New York Doll”) and college friend of the Romney sons, according to Politico, follows Romney through his 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. The film will premier at Sundance on Jan. 17 in Salt Lake City before its release on Netflix on Jan. 24, according to Netflix.
Whiteley was given “unprecedented access” to Romney’s family and campaign staff as they met with voters and made decisions about the campaign, the company said.
"Greg Whiteley's ‘Mitt’ provides viewers a surprising level of access into a fascinating world," said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary and Comedy. "This rare inside look at Mitt Romney and his family as he runs for president showcases a unique kind of storytelling, one which takes the viewer well beyond the politics. We are thrilled to be providing our viewers with this one-of-a-kind film from such a talented filmmaker."
Some of Romney’s staff members, Politico said, advised against the release of the film due to concerns about criticism of his Mormon faith.
“There was a lot of anxiety about that being out there and for broadcast before we even got started with the campaign. I wanted to see that killed,” Romney advisor Eric Fehrnstrom told Politico.
The Romney family liked it, though Mitt Romney took more convincing, Politico wrote.
“I couldn’t believe I was filming inside rooms and situations I had no business being in,” Whiteley told ABC News. “I couldn’t be more pleased to share this experience with audiences around the world through Netflix.”
