MOAB — A well-known Moab BASE jumper died Saturday when his parachute opened too late during a jump.
Daniel Moore, 22, jumped from a popular BASE jumping spot in the cliffs above state Route 128 about 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Moab Police Lt. Scott Mallon reported. Witnesses told police Moore was in an "unusually high head position," and appeared to be waving his arms to gain stability.
Moore missed the first time he reached back to pull his chute, Mallon said. He successfully reached the chute on his second attempt, but it deployed too late and he landed in an area below the cliff.
It took crews more than four hours to reach Moore's body because of treacherous conditions created by a recent snowstorm, Mallon said. The jump site is within Moab's city limits.
