SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Former Republican U.S. Rep. Merrill Cook says he'll try to reclaim Utah's 2nd Congressional District seat.

One day after Josh Romney, son of former presidential contender Mitt Romney, said he would not run, Cook announced his bid to take on Democratic incumbent Jim Matheson.

Cook represented the district from 1996 to 2000. In 2000, he lost his party's primary to Derek Smith, who later lost to Matheson.

In 2004, Cook ran unaffiliated for Salt Lake County mayor, losing to Democrat Peter Corroon.

Cook rejoined the GOP in 2006 to run unsuccessfully against 3rd District Rep. Chris Cannon.
