LOGAN — A Utah State University student died Monday after riding his bike into a slack line.
USU Police Chief Steve Mecham said the 24-year-old male student from West Jordan was riding his bike down Old Main Hill when he ran into a slack line — a rope tied between two trees that people balance and walk across for recreation. The line was suspended about chest height.
The student was treated at the scene and taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Mecham said. His name was not immediately released.
"We're sorry that it happened. (It's) just a tragedy," he said. "It's hard for everybody that's involved."
Mecham said there were two slack lines set up in different locations. The people who set up the slack lines have issued statements, which Mecham said are being evaluated.
"There's a lot of activity on Old Main Hill," he said. "We don't have a lot of accidents compared to the number of people that are here."
