ELKO, Nevada (AP) — A Utah man has been arrested on attempted murder charges for badly beating a hitchhiker he picked up near the Nevada-Utah state line.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports that 35-year-old William P. Lose was arrested Friday in West Wendover, Nev.

Authorities say Lose earlier picked up Wayne Gattke at a truck stop in West Wendover. Gattke was trying to get a ride to Salt Lake City.

Investigators say Lose pulled over and pistol whipped Gattke, leaving him badly beaten.

Police say Gattke lost a lot of blood but still walked more than one mile to hitchhike a ride back to West Wendover. He was taken to a hospital in Salt Lake City.

Lose is in Elko County Jail with bail at $110,000.
