SOUTH JORDAN — South Jordan was the second-fastest growing large city in the U.S. between 2011 and 2012, according to new U.S. Census Bureau numbers.
The city's population grew from 50,418 to 55,934, an increase of 4.87 percent, second only to the 4.91 percent growth in San Marcos, Texas.
Fifteen cities were ranked in all, with eight of the cities located in Texas. South Jordan was the only Utah city on the list, and the only city in the Mountain West region to make the list.
Those moving to South Jordan tend to be well-educated professionals with larger than average families, Mayor Scott Osborne said. The city’s average home value is about $380,000.
"It’s not an especially inexpensive place to build and buy," Osborne said.
Brian Preece, South Jordan's economic development director, said the city’s flexible and professional approach to development has been an advantage. The city built a reputation as "a place developers view as a welcoming environment," Preece said, “and without the developers, no city gets built."
Significant future growth in South Jordan is expected to come from the 4,100-acre Daybreak development project on the city's west side. Daybreak is about 25 percent complete, with more growth planned.
