SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A doctor accused of illegally writing prescriptions for painkillers pleaded not guilty.
Warren Stack appeared in federal court Monday, five days after he was indicted on 18 charges related to his medical practice in Salt Lake County. He'll remain free while the case winds through court.
Stack is charged with conspiracy, illegal distribution of a controlled substance, health-care fraud and money laundering. Authorities claim he turned his waiting room into an express lane for painkillers, writing prescriptions without giving people a thorough checkup.
The indictment says five people died from overdoses after getting painkillers through Stack.
