PROVO — A new report says one of the fastest growing metro areas nationwide is found right here in Utah.

The software company Pitney Bowes studied 384 metro markets, and then named the Provo-Orem areas as the fastest growing in the country.

The company's Metro Magnets Index shows over the next five years, Provo and Orem will grow by 7.4 percent, adding around 11,000 households. They say that will outpace the other fast-growing areas such as Austin and Fort Hood, Texas.

While Provo and Orem may have a faster growth percentage, the report says the cities adding the most people will be Houston, Atlanta, and Washington DC.

During a slow economy topping a growth list such as this one can be beneficial, as companies look for places to build and expand.

Top Major* Metro Areas for Projected Percentage Growth

*More than 100,000 households

  1. Provo-Orem, UT 7.4%
  2. Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos, TX 7.4%
  3. Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood, TX 7.2%
  4. Raleigh-Cary, NC 7.2%
  5. San Antonio-New Braunfels, TX 7.1%
  6. Ocala, FL 6.9%
  7. Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, TX 6.7%
  8. Jacksonville, FL 6.6%
  9. Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill, NC-SC 6.6%
  10. McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, TX 6.6%

Most of the metro areas around the country have seen a slow-down in growth. Detroit, Mich. and Charleston, W.V. are the only major metropolitan areas that can expect to see a decline in the number of households over the next five years. Cleveland, Ohio should expect just a 0.2 percent increase, according to the study.
