SALT LAKE CITY — Elizabeth Smart will write a memoir to be published next year detailing her kidnapping, life in captivity and eventual rescue.

St. Martin's Press announced Wednesday its purchase of the project, which Smart will work on jointly with Chris Stewart, the author of religious books including "The Great and the Terrible" series.

Smart was kidnapped at 14 years old from her Salt Lake City home June 5, 2002, and remained in captivity for nine months before being reunited with her family. The kidnapping and resulting trial of Smart's kidnapper, Brian David Mitchell, did not come to a conclusion until Mitchell was found guilty on Dec. 10, 2010.

Smart has been the subject of multiple books and created the Elizabeth Smart Foundation to fight child victimization. She served a mission in France for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before marrying Matthew Gilmour in Hawaii in February.

She said in a statement to The New York Times she was not interested in telling her story until after she had testified at Mitchell's trial.

"Because of the legal proceedings, I couldn't provide the broader context necessary to truly understand what occurred," she said.

The tentative publication date of the memoir is Sept. 13, 2013.
