BRIGHAM CITY — It was an exciting day for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, particularly those who live in the Brigham City area. They participated Sunday in the dedication of their new temple.

The services began at 9 a.m., with another at noon and the final one at 3 p.m. There have been big smiles and tears of joy.

As the choir sang, the temple doors opened and Pres. Boyd K. Packer, the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, led the procession to the corner stone. Brigham City is the hometown of Packer and his wife, Donna Packer, so this is a very special day for them, and the reason President Thomas S. Monson asked him to dedicate the temple.

Some 40,000 members of the LDS church in northern Utah and southeastern Idaho will now come to the new Brigham City Temple. But to the ones who attended Sunday's dedication, it is deeply personal.

"It meant a lot to me because I have ancestors that helped settle here, and I felt their spirits there, and that just made it very special," said Pam Stringham, a Brigham City resident.

The children in attendance enjoyed it, too.

"I'm just really excited to be here," said 6-year-old Marlee Ann Hull.

"President Monson assigned President Boyd K. Packer, the president of the Quorum of the Twelve, to come to his hometown and dedicate this temple, and he dedicated it this morning in the first session," said William R. Walker, executive director of the temple department. "What a great and glorious day, a wonderful day for Brigham City and all of the church, really.

The new Brigham City Temple is the 14th in Utah and the 139th worldwide for the LDS church. Many Latter-day Saints throughout the state participated in their own meetinghouses Sunday, instead of regular worship services.
