WEST VALLEY CITY — Police were investigating the death of man found in a canal by students walking to school Friday.

Just before 7 a.m., a group of juveniles being walked to school by an adult spotted what appeared to be a body in the canal near 5800 South and 4100 West. Police were contacted, and a dive team was dispatched, said West Valley City Police Sgt. Mike Powell.

The dive team found the body of a male adult, identified as 43-year-old Richard Anthony Byrd, partially submerged in the water and caught on debris, Powell said.

Powell said the autopsy would be key in determining a cause of death. He estimated the man had been dead for 24 hours or less when his body was found.

The West Valley City Police Department will continue to work with the Office of the Medical Examiner in an effort to better understand the circumstances surrounding this death.
