SOUTH SALT LAKE — After months of debate, South Salt Lake has finally given the old Granite High School a new purpose.
The city's urban design director Sharon Hauri has said that the city proposes to turn the school grounds into a commercial development, but refused to go into detail until they are ironed out and announced next month.
"We have a use in mind that's very business-oriented, and we think it's compatible and suits that campus very well," Hauri said.
South Salt Lake's lease on the 28 acres at 3305 South 500 East ends in November with an option to buy for $8.7 million.
Teresa Black and Linda Bagley worry if the school's classic façade will be ripped down for another strip mall. "A lot of these commercial developments in that area have just plummeted," Bagley said.
They want a community center, but a $25 million bond to finance it failed in November. So, the city is about to close a deal with a private developer to make it something unique.
