ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- Dixie State College's bid to become the University of Utah at St. George could be in trouble.

A three-hour discussion yesterday between school officials and St. George residents broke down over whether Dixie should be anywhere in the school's new name.

U. officials say 'Dixie' has a negative connotation outside Utah -- and that it could hurt faculty recruitment.

The University of Utah also is insisting that Dixie State College surrender fiscal, administrative and policy control if it wants to affiliate with the U.

The U.'s chief trustee, Randy L. Dryer, says none of this has been resolved.
