CENTERVILLE — A brush fire burning in the foothills of Centerville is now under control.

A group shooting clay pigeons sparked the fire around 8 p.m. Monday. Fire crews were able to protect nearby houses as the fire spread on the hillside, but a few residents voluntarily evacuated anyway.

Ten firefighters remain on the scene and the fire is now 80 percent contained. It burned about 20 acres.

It's unknown if those responsible for starting the fire will face charges.

Kathy Jo Pollock of the Northern Utah Interagency Fire Center says homeowners can proactively protect their homes during what's shaping up to be a busy fire season.

"It's extremely important that people do defensible space," she said. "They make sure there's no firewood or anything up against their house. Make sure the limbs, trees are taken down over roofs. Make sure you have green lawn 100 to 200 feet from your homes."

She also suggests making sure leaves are taken out of rain gutters.
