SALT LAKE CITY -- Unified police are investigating a fatal accident involving a TRAX train and an 86-year-old man.

They say the train was northbound from the Daybreak subdivision headed for the University of Utah when it hit the man on the tracks just south of the Meadowbrook station near 200 West and Central Avenue (4050 South).

Witnesses say they saw the Midvale man sitting in his car near the tracks watching several trains go by this morning. But at some point the man got out and started walking across the tracks, where he was hit and killed. UPD detective Shane Manwaring says there was plenty of warning the train was coming.

"The TRAX arms were down. The lights were flashing. There was an audio alert the train was coming. There was plenty of warning for this man to know the train was approaching." he said.

Residents said the crossing isn't a dangerous one - it's well marked.

The victim's name has not been released because police are trying to notify his relatives.

The death of the man caused backups along the TRAX line for hours this morning while police investigated the scene. Thirty people were on board the red line train that was headed southbound when it hit the man.

As for why the man was here and whether his death was intentional, police have yet to determined that and don't want to speculate. But they stressed that this is very tragic and people have to obey the warning signals when near train tracks.
