HUNTSVILLE -- Temperatures may be approaching the mid-80s, but for the first time ever in June, one ski resort re- opened.

Snowbasin Resort re-opened Saturday, inviting skiers and snowboarders around the state to enjoy in a warm day of skiing.

The tremendous amount of snowpack in the mountains, including a 100 inch base at the resort, prompted Snowbasin to weigh the possibility of an extended ski season. The opportunity to ski in June was too much for Snowbasin's General Manager to pass up, saying, "Cool temperatures and a significant amount of late season snow has kept our base over 100 inches deep at mid-mountain so it only seems natural for Snowbasin to re-open on weekends."

Skiers and snowboarders, too, love the late-season skiing.

"The shred is amazing," said snowboarder Rachel Webb. "It's awesome to be out here in June."

Although the snow was a bit slushy by mid-morning, Snowbasin drew in a decent crowd.

"I was completely surprised," said snowboarder Ryan Wicknick. "I had no idea they would do something like this."

Management at Snowbasin said they're looking to stay open for as long as they can.

"We're going to be open until the snow goes away," said Jason Dyer, PR and marketing director for Snowbasin.

Snowbird is also open for the weekends and is promising to stay open at least through July 4.
