Gene Kennedy reportingA shooting took place only 24 hours ago, but the police investigation may be at a dead end already.

West Valley Police say their investigation hinges on the victim. He was the only witness. And right now, that's a problem.

The 33 year-old victim has a history of gang involvement and isn't telling police who the shooter is.

An officer with West Valley Police told Eyewitness News this morning that police believe the victim wants to handle yesterday's attack himself. In other words, revenge.

And with no other witnesses, for now, that leaves police at a standstill.

Lt. Bill Froelich, WVC Police Dept.: "We have no idea what the circumstances were, the dynamics behind it. It will probably be a little while for our investigation to proceed before we figure that out."

What we do know is that the shooting happened where the victim lived, the Arlington Park Apartments. Investigators think one or two suspects approached the victim in the complex's parking lot.

After the 33-year-old was shot, he ran to his friend's house. As the victim bled from the stomach, the friend started driving him to the hospital. A neighbor also saw the wounded man and called police.

Officers spotted the car, pulled it over, saw the injury and called for medics. The victim was flown to the University of Utah hospital. Originally he was in critical condition, but we now understand he's been upgraded to serious and is expected to recover.

Police are hoping that as he heals he'll be more forthcoming about yesterday's circumstances and drop a name.
