SALT LAKE CITY — The regents of the University of Washington have scheduled a special meeting Monday to discuss the final candidate in the school's presidential search, and indications are it could be University of Utah President Michael Young.

Young has been widely rumored to be one of the finalists for the job. In the past two weeks, UW officials have contacted several people connected to the U. — including a trustee, a prominent local business leader and a former administrator — for a reference check on Young, according to people familiar with the matter.

The previous UW president, Mark Emmert, was one of the highest-paid public college presidents in the country when he left in October to become president of the NCAA.

Emmert earned $694,697 in 2009-10, while Young made $723,595, including a $375,192 lump sum of deferred compensation, according to data published in March by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The U. has declined to comment on whether Young is a candidate for the UW job.

Young served as dean of George Washington University Law School before he replaced former U. President Bernie Machen in 2004.

The agenda for Monday's meeting calls for a closed session for the regents to "evaluate the qualifications of an applicant for public employment."

The board's chair is then expected to report on the "selection of a final candidate for the position of president of the University of Washington, conditional on the successful negotiation of an employment contract," before receiving authority from the regents to finalize that agreement.
