Nishi Gupta ReportingThe Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office is investigating the murder of an 80-year-old man. Police say his family found him unconscious, lying on the ground of his Holladay home.
Police say Steven Poulos was home alone this afternoon, then family came and found him.
It was supposed to be a happy time for Steve Poulos' family. Police say an upcoming event was scheduled for the large group. But several days shy of that occassion, family members found him in the basement, lifeless.
"They called 911, started cpr, trying to revive him."
Soon after medical help arrived, officials discovered a gun shot wound on his body.
Sgt. Paul Jaroscak/ Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office: "The location of the wound, [plus] there's other indications in the house that things had been disturbed. It doesn't appear to be a natural death, so it puts it in the category of homicide."
As police continue their investigation, neighbors say they're trying to get a grip on what happened. They feel this neighborhood has always been friendly, quiet, and safe. But today that has changed.
Maria Ortiz/Neighbor: "It's scary to realize that you think you are safe, but you're really not in a place like this, because you don't know exactly how it happened, or who did it, or if that person lives in the neighborhood."
Police tell us a car parked near the Poulos home has been reported stolen, and they're asking for the public's help in finding it. Authorities say it's a maroon 1997 Subaru Legacy with four doors, California license plate 4KOB631.
Today, several people contacted KSL to tell us about the type of man Steven Poulos was. They sent pictures saying he was a World War II hero, and someone who they will dearly miss.
