CENTERVILLE — A county health department has closed a Centerville smoke shop for selling tobacco to minors.
City Smoke Shop, located at 356 N. Marketplace Drive, failed to stop selling tobacco to minors after repeated warnings, said Lewis Garrett, director of the Davis County Health Department.
I've never seen such blatant disregard for the law. We rarely see someone get to four violations, let alone six.
–Lewis Garrett, Davis Co. Health Dept.
“I’ve never seen such blatant disregard for the law and selling tobacco to minors," Garrett said. "We rarely see someone even get to four violations, let alone six.”
Garrett said parents were calling police after finding their children with tobacco products from the store. The store was offered programs to help it stop selling to minors, but it didn’t use any of them, the health director said.
The store was first issued a civil penalty by the State Tax Commission. On the third offense, the store had its license revoked for 30 days, and on the fourth, its license was taken away for a year.
“We’re not out to put people out of business," Garrett said. "This is a last resort after multiple chances to change things, which they didn’t do.”
