SALT LAKE CITY — The long-vacant corner that has become known as the "Sugar Hole" took a step toward being developed Wednesday night.

The Salt Lake City Planning Commission approved a site plan by Mecham Management Inc. for a scaled-back, mixed-use project planned for the corner of 2100 South and Highland Drive in Sugar House.

As now envisioned, the development will feature a mix of street-level shops and restaurants, topped by five levels of apartments — all accessed by two levels of underground parking.

When developer Craig Mecham first pitched the project in 2007, it also included an office building and condominiums.

The revised plans call for 44,000 square feet of retail space, with 204 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.

Earlier this month, the developer requested approval for a $5 million new construction loan from the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency. Mecham needs to secure financing for the project for the loan to be approved.

The developer said he plans to construction this fall.
