Fatal wreck: Vehicle goes off I-215 overpass

SALT LAKE COUNTY -- Investigators are on the scene of a fatal crash in the area of east Interstate 215 and 3900 South.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers say a 40-year-old woman in a gold Chevy Tahoe was northbound on the I-215 onramp at 3900 South just before 8 a.m. when, for some reason, the vehicle swerved.

The vehicle slid to the right, went up a snow embankment against guardrail, slid along the guardrail for about 50 feet, and then went over the overpass, landing on its top on 3900 South below.

Diane Berg of Holladay, the driver of the SUV, died in the wreck. She was wearing her seat belt.

Investigators say the evidence, including tire marks, indicate Berg was driving too fast when she got on the ramp.

Berg's family says Berg was on her way to work when the crash happened. She was the mother of a 4-year-old girl, 8-year-old boy and 12-year-old boy.

The family says they are in a state of complete shock and sadness.

The Utah Highway Patrol is making a plea to anyone who may have witnessed the crash during the morning commute to come forward.

Speeding on this ramp is a common problem, the UHP says.

"The ramp is a right curve, and we have a lot of vehicles that come up onto 215 a little too fast and they drift over into that travel lane and tend to swerve back to the right," said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Martin Turner.

Roads were relatively dry and not icy the morning of the crash. Troopers say if drivers slow down and go the 20-mile-an-hour speed limit getting on the ramp, accidents can be avoided.

Eastbound lanes on 3900 South under I-215 were shut down. Traffic on the interstate was not affected.
