SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Utah Transit Authority says it won discretionary grants to replace buses and draw up plans for a new maintenance shop.
The UTA says it was awarded $8.4 million by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
About half of the money will be used on environmental studies and design work for a new $80 million maintenance shop.
The rest will pay 80 percent of the cost of 11 buses with more power and tire chains for travel to ski areas in Little and Big Cottonwood canyons.
UTA officials on Monday thanked Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff for awarding the two grants in a competitive process.
