The College Board, creators of the AP exam, says 17,210 Utah students took Advance Placement exams in 2009 and passed them at a rate of 67 percent. That's a 5.2 percent increase in AP participation and an increase of 2 percent in passage rates from the year before.

Utah students outperformed their national peers, who passed the exams at a rate of 58 percent. Passing AP tests means the student scored a 3, 4 or 5 on the test, thus earning college credit.

The College Board also released data on 2009 Utah student performance on the SAT college entrance exam.

A total of 1,933 Utah students took the SAT and scored a mean score of 568 on reading, 559 on math and 547 on writing.

National mean scores were 501 in reading, 516 in math and 492 in writing.

Relatively few Utah students sit for the SAT exam. Instead they opt for the ACT, which is used by all Utah public colleges and universities.
