SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Justice Clarence Thomas of the U.S. Supreme Court will swear in one of his former clerks as the newest member of the Utah Supreme Court.

Tom Lee will be sworn into the new post on July 19.

Lee is a Brigham Young University professor who has never served as a judge. He will replace retiring Justice Michael Wilkins, whose term expired May 15. Utah justices serve renewable, 10-year terms.

Lee currently works part time for the Salt Lake City law firm Howard, Phillips & Anderson practicing trademark, copyright and trade secret law. He has worked full time for BYU, where he got his undergraduate degree in economics, since 1997.

Lee's brother, Mike Lee, is the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate.
