BOUNTIFUL -- Former state Sen. Dan Eastman, R-Bountiful, has passed away. He apparently suffered a heart attack while driving to a doctor's appointment Tuesday evening.
Information from a state Senate spokesman indicates Eastman flagged down a passing motorist on Redwood Road for help but died before help arrived.
Eastman had recently undergone a kidney transplant and was recovering from that surgery as well.
Eastman served in the Utah Senate from 2000 to 2008 and focused on education during his political career. He was elected Senate Majority Whip in 2004, then re-elected to the office in 2006.
"If you knew Dan, you respected and trusted him," Senate President Michael Waddoups said Wednesday. "He had friends from all walks of life, from one end of the state to the other. His passing is a significant loss. Claudette, his family and his friends are all in our prayers."
Eastman also founded Dan Eastman Chrysler/Plymouth/Jeep/Suzuki in Davis County.
He was 64 years old and is survived by his wife, Claudette Crawford, five children and eight grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at the Russon Brothers Mortuary on Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
A second viewing will be held Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Bountiful Utah Central Stake Center (640 South 750 East), followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m.
