USA Cycling reconvenes to examine Pan-Am Championships picks

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — USA Cycling is reconsidering its selections for next month's Pan Am Championships, a decision that could keep reigning Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong from beginning her comeback.

Armstrong, who retired after the London Games, was initially chosen to compete May 5-10 in Leon, Mexico. But USA Cycling said Friday that it would examine the selection criteria that picked Armstrong, Carmen Small, Lauren Hall and Coryn Rivera for the championships.

The selections were made using recent modifications that put more emphasis on quantifiable metrics. But some had argued the changes were not published in a timely manner, so USA Cycling is using the more subjective 2008 criteria to decide on its team for Mexico.

That could mean Armstrong is left off the team as she begins a comeback that could culminate with the 2016 Rio Games. Armstrong has won the last two time trial gold medals.
