US leads in medals...Gold for Phelps and Ledecky...O's back in first...No Hall of Fame game

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The U.S. leads in the medal count at the Olympics. The Americans have won 12 medals overall with three gold, five silver and four bronze. China is second with eight overall while Italy and Japan each has won seven.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — There were gold medal winning performances last night in Rio for the U.S. in swimming by Katie Ledecky and Michael Phelps. Nineteen-year old Ledecky won the women's 400 free while Phelps was part of the 4X100 relay team that struck gold. For Phelps the gold is the 19th of his Olympic career.

CHICAGO (AP) — Baltimore has regained first place in the American League East. The Orioles destroyed the White Sox 10-2 as Manny Machado led the way with seven runs batted in and three home runs. The O's top the Blue Jays by a game with Boston three back.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — The Pro Football Hall of Fame game was canceled yesterday because of poor field conditions. The Packers were slated to face the Colts in the annual game in Canton, Ohio. The game was called off because the field was deemed unsafe.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Denny Hamlin was the winner of the Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen Sunday. The win was his first career road course victory by holding off a last lap challenge from Martin Truex, Jr. That changed on the final lap when Brad Keselowski tapped Truex and spun him out.
