5A Preview: Alta-Bingham III, The Rivalry Continues

For the third straight year Bingham and Alta will do battle on the turf at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

In 2006, Bingham was heavily favored to win it all but they got a big scare from Alta. Hawks junior running back Sausan Shakerin, now a Utah Ute, ran for 276 yards and three touchdowns in front of 20,000 fans. His third score with less than a minute to play cut the Miners lead to 21-19 but Alta's two point conversion that would have tied the game failed. Bingham held on to claim their first state football title in 60 years.

Last year, the two teams met in the 5A Semifinals. Alta jumped out to a 21-3 lead. Bingham's rally would fall short as Alta ended a 4 game losing streak against the Miners 21-17. The Hawks would defeat Layton the the 5A Championship game and claim their first state title since 1987.

This year the teams once again find themselves playing for a title and based on talent and records could be just as good as the last two.

Bingham started the season with a shocking loss to Skyline. The team played much better in week 2 but would fall short against Alta on the Hawks home field. But since that loss the Miners have won 11 straight games dominating their opponents by an average of 29 points.

This time around, the Alta hawks are the defending 5A State Champions. They return to the state title game for the third straight year. Their explosive offense averages 37 points while their hard hitting defense gives up just 13 points a game including 4 shutouts this season.
