I have had a few inquiries about the composition of the officiating crew for this Saturday's game with UCLA, and here's what I know:

Unless there has been a late change, the crew is to be composed of a MWC referee and two of his MWC colleagues, along with four officials from the WAC. This is in line with the cross-conference, regional crew system detailed in this space last week. Traditionally, the 3/4 split looks like this: Referee, Back Judge and Umpire from one league, with the "wing officials" (Line Judge, Linesman, Field Judge and Side Judge) from the other league.

Thanks to my friend and former KSL colleague Michael Bennett for alerting me to this fine column in the L.A. Times. It spells out the very thing I have been thinking about over the last few days, and underscores the inherent injustice of the BCS system. As parity struggles to swim to the surface in the college football sea, any chances of truly rewarding such parity are drowned by a system that allows only one guaranteed BCS Bowl berth (with strings attached) for roughly half of the teams playing FBS football.
