Idle... But Not in the Polls

Well, that bye week worked out pretty well for the Cougars. Without playing a game, BYU moved up 4 spots in the Coaches' poll to 7th, and up 3 spots in the AP poll, to 8th. In the initial Harris Poll, BYU is 9th. The Coaches' and Harris Poll results account for two-thirds of teams' scores in the BCS Standings. For complete Harris Poll results, click here. Utah moves up two spots to 15th in both the Coaches' and AP polls, while previously ranked TCU plummets into the 30s after its loss to Oklahoma (the new #1). In the Harris Poll, Utah is also 15th, while TCU is 29th.

BYU is ranked in the Top 10 for the first time since the 2001 season, when BYU rose as high as 7th in the Coaches' poll (11/18/01) and 8th in the AP (11/11/01). Before this week, the last time BYU was ranked in the Top 10 was on December 2, 2001, after its win at Mississippi State improved BYU's record to 12-0. On that date, BYU ranked 8th in the Coaches' poll, and 9th in the AP poll.

This week, only Penn State jumped BYU in the polls (6th in all three surveys--up from 12th). Undefeated Boise State went from 20th to 18th (Coaches') and 19th to 17th (AP). Boise State is 18th in the Harris Poll.

In the Coaches'/AP polls, BYU is ranked ahead of the highest-ranked teams from the Pac-10 (USC-9/9), Big East (South Florida-10/10) and ACC (Virginia Tech-24/20). USC is ranked ahead of BYU in the Harris Poll (7th).
