Utah has growing number of working artists

SALE LAKE CITY (AP) -- The number of working artists in Utah is on the rise and growing fast.

That's the finding from a first-time study by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The "Artists in the Workforce" study compared census data from 1990 and 2000. Over that 10 year period the number of working artists in Utah grew 44 percent, from 10,032 to 14,425. Only Nevada had a faster growth rate -- 66 percent.

Overall, the study ranked Utah 21st in total number of working artists.

Utah Arts Council assistant director Lynette Hiskey attributes the number of dancers, actors, animators and other artists to strong liberal arts programs at state colleges and universities.
