Utah grabs nearly $900,000

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah has intercepted nearly $900,000 in federal tax rebates from people who owe taxes to the state.

Don't expect a notice from the Utah State Tax Commission. It's up to the federal government to tell people that the state stepped in and grabbed the cash intended to stimulate the economy.

"We do participate in the federal offset program," said Charlie Roberts, commission spokesman.

The rebates, which are expected to reach 130 million U.S. households, range up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for married couples, plus $300 per child for eligible parents. Depending on family income, the payments can be less.

Utah so far has taken $880,000 set aside for more than 1,000 people, Roberts said.

Parents behind in child support won't lose their federal checks, said John Reidhead, Utah's finance director.

Like many states, Utah keeps the Internal Revenue Service informed about people who owe taxes. Armed with that information, the federal government knows when to send money to the state and not the delinquent taxpayer, Roberts said.
