(KSL News) Utah's two Republican congressmen want to force a vote on a federal immigration bill that could affect The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' missionary program.
According to the Deseret News, Reps. Chris Cannon and Rob Bishop have signed a petition to force debate on The Secure America through Verification and Enforcement Act (SAVE Act).
The bill would require employers to use a federal system to check new hires' work eligibility.
Church authorities contacted the congressmen to discuss concerns that the act would affect a law that gives religious denominations immunity from federal prosecution when they send undocumented immigrants on missions.
