Southern Utah communities add reverse 911 services

CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) -- Residents of some southern Utah communities will now get a telephone alert from authorities if a fire, flood or other emergency is threatening.

Iron County Emergency Director Charlie Morris says the "Reverse 911" emergency notification system uses a database of landline numbers to call homes and businesses in the effected area.

Residents can also register their cell phone numbers with Iron County's emergency services office.

The system was purchased by governments of Iron and Beaver counties and the towns of Enterprise and New Harmony in Washington County.

Morris says if an emergency call is not answered on the first try, the system will make two additional attempts at delivering the emergency message.
