Sex offender bill sails through committee

The bill's sponsor, GOP Rep. Paul Ray of Clearfield, says he would prefer the death penalty for sex offenders. But he says the bill, unanimously passed out of the House Law Enforcement Committee, would force offenders to register 10 days after moving to Utah. They also would have to register every six months after that.

But democratic Rep. David Litvack of Salt Lake says he has his doubts, fearing if the laws are too tough, offenders might not register at all.
