Salt Lake officer charged with having illegal relationship with parolee

SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake police officer is facing a criminal charge after prosecutors say he had an illegal sexual relationship with a woman on parole.

Robert Tilton Hinds, 42, of Salt Lake City, was charged Friday in 3rd District Court with custodial sexual relations, a third-degree felony.

Between May 6 and Nov. 30, 2018, Hinds engaged in a sexual relationship with a woman on parole, according to charging documents.

“Hinds stated that they had sex every day and (the woman) thought their relationship was serious,” the charges state.

The court documents also allege that there is an audio recording of Hinds “making threats of physical violence” to the woman in a phone call.

Salt Lake police on Friday said that Hinds was placed on leave shortly after the investigation into his actions began, and he resigned shortly afterward. Unified police conducted the investigation.
