Pro-voucher group calls PTA award ‘ironic'

Mary Richards reporting A group hoping for more change in Utah's education system says it's ironic that Utah's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) received a national award for fighting vouchers in this state.

Both sides of the voucher fight hit the streets hard leading to last November's vote. Now the national PTA is applauding Utah's PTA for its part in bringing down vouchers.

The pro-voucher group Parents for Choice in Education says many local PTA members were told to vote against vouchers because the national PTA told them to.

"The PTA takes the stance that's just aligning itself with the agenda of the teachers' union," said spokeswoman Leah Barker.

But the national PTA says Utah's organization supported the PTA's mission and showed outstanding advocacy.
