Woman fleeing at 124 mph arrested following 2-county chase, UHP says

OREM — A woman was arrested following a police chase that stretched from Salt Lake County to Utah County and reached speeds of over 120 mph.

Kelly Lynn Eckard, 41, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Monday for investigation of failing to stop at the command of police and reckless driving.

The incident began just after 10 a.m. Monday on I-15 near 5300 South when a Utah Highway Patrol trooper spotted a Chevrolet Cruze traveling at "an extremely high" rate of speed.

"I activated my lights and sirens and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The vehicle continued to travel at a high rate of speed and failed to yield. During my pursuit of the vehicle I noted speeds of the vehicle at 124 mph. I paced the vehicle through a majority of the pursuit at speeds greater than 115 mph," according to a police booking affidavit.

While still speeding, troopers say Eckard used the left shoulder to pass other vehicles. She continued traveling at least 115 mph as she went into Utah County, the affidavit alleges, and near Orem, she "began to slow and swerve erratically."

"The vehicle failed to maintain its lane and sideswiped the left concrete barrier under the University Parkway structure," the affidavit says.

As the vehicle came to a stop, troopers converged on Eckard. The freeway was briefly shut down Monday as she was arrested.
