SALT LAKE CITY — Police say a teenager was shot in Salt Lake City after a fight escalated into a shooting on Thursday evening.

Officers were responding to an unrelated call at Meadows Community Park — located at 1920 West and 400 North — when they heard sounds of gunfire nearby.

Investigators say they responded to reports of gunshots around 6:19 p.m. at 500 N. New Star Drive, just north of Meadows Redwood Park. Police say they found a 14-year-old girl who had been shot but say her injuries are not life-threatening.

Officers believe the shooting to be gang-related. They say two teenage males got into a fight for an unknown reason. At some point after the fight, someone likely associated with one of the young men showed up and fired several rounds.

"There was some sort of fight between two individuals at the Meadows Park, and that resulted in firearms being taken out and at least one of those guns being fired, ultimately wounding that teenager," Salt Lake police spokesman Brent Weisberg said.

They are unsure if the victim was a target of the shooter or a bystander.

Police say they apprehended one of the suspects, who jumped over a large wall near the 200-block of North Cornell Street — which is a few blocks east of the park where the shooting occurred. Officers say they recovered a gun.

They are still searching for one other person. Weisberg said they know the identity of the person who is at large and are attempting to contact them.

"To that person, again, this person is a minor, a teenager," Weisberg said. "So if they see anything on social media about this case, we want that person to turn themselves in."

The shooting is being investigated by the Salt Lake City Police Department's gang unit.
