Man shot at Valley Fair Mall; 3 boys taken into custody

WEST VALLEY CITY — A man was hospitalized after being shot at Valley Fair Mall, and three boys were taken into custody in connection to the shooting in West Valley City on Monday.

The shooting happened shortly before 6 p.m. inside the mall in front of a store near 3601 S. 2700 West.

West Valley City police said the 25-year-old man was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound, but his injury does not appear to be life-threatening.

"I think we're lucky that we only had one victim today," West Valley City Police Lt. Steve Burke said.

The three boys believed to have been involved in the shooting were found across the street at a TRAX station in front of the police department, and a gun was found nearby, according to police. Officers took the boys into custody and say there are no other suspects outstanding.

Police have not disclosed the boys' ages.

The shooting was caught on camera, and police are using the footage to determine what happened leading up to the shooting. Police said they believe this was an isolated incident, and they don't know if the man who was shot knew the three boys.

A customer eating at a restaurant in the mall described being put on lockdown after the shooting occurred just yards away from where he sat down for dinner.

"I order, I pay for it, and they said you need to lock in," Richard O'Thorup said. "They said for your safety, we'd like you to stay in. We're going to lock the doors."

A small area north of the center court was contained for crime scene processing, and multiple businesses closed early after the shooting.
