Ogden considers rebate for high water bills

OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- Some Ogden residents may be getting money back after paying higher water bills.

Dozens have complained over the last three months about higher water rates that were approved by the city council in January.

The increase -- in the form of a surcharge for certain water users -- was meant to encourage water conservation and help fund $52 million in infrastructure improvements over five years.

On Tuesday, Mayor Matthew Godfrey recommended reducing the surcharge from about $7.70 per 1,000 gallons to $2.30.

If approved, the proposal also could mean about $310,000 in rebates for water customers.

The council is expected to discuss the recommendation on Thursday.
