More campers, hikers taking along electronic gadgets

Randall Jeppesen reportingCamping is becoming more high-tech as people look to the sun to make sure they can take their electronic gadgets out on the trail.

Going camping, hiking, or backpacking? Why not take the solar charger, the solarport or the solar backpack? All are designed to charge your cell phone, video iPod and hand-held gaming system while you enjoy the outdoors.

"It seems kind of ridiculous," said one avid outdoorsman who isn't thrilled about the new solar gear showing up at camping and electronics stores.

But there are those who have to have their music

"Yeah, I always have to have it with me, pretty much," he said.

Of course, being able to charge your cell phone in an emergency is a good thing. But the value of having all the other electric gizmos out on the trail is up for debate.
