Merrill Osmond takes pride in local musical role

Carole Mikita reporting The Osmond brothers are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, making appearances throughout the world. But one of them is fulfilling a dream right here in Utah. Merrill Osmond has taken a starring role at Hale Centre Theatre.

Osmond says he has wanted to perform in this musical since his friend, Larry Gatlin, starred in the national touring company. Now, his long-time love of history has become a reality.

Osmond grew up taking center stage, but this is new. He plays Captain Emmett Lochran in "The Civil War".

He told Eyewitness News he first heard and loved this music years ago, while performing in Branson, Mo. "I've always wanted to do something like this, and this was the perfect role to play, and so I accepted it. I said, 'Let's do it,'" Osmond said.

Walt Whitman called the Civil War America's singular event. Osmond says he can feel something on that stage. "Over 600,000 men gave their lives for what we have in America today, and when you're singing those songs and reflecting, you can feel the presence of so many," he said.

Fifty years ago, Osmond and his brothers became national singing sensations. They will celebrate the anniversary throughout the world, but this show in Utah, considered home, is very special. "To be able to bring 50 years worth of entertainment experience with the Hale group, it has really been magical," Osmond said.

Performances of "The Civil War" continue through April 5 at Hale Centre Theatre in West Valley City. Merrill Osmond has several performances out of town during the show's run. The box office will let customers know when he will not be here.
