KEARNS — Unified police are investigating a fatal auto-pedestrian accident.

Just before 7 p.m. Wednesday, a 46-year-old man was crossing 5400 South at 5044 West, said Unified Police Sgt. Melody Cutler. The man was not in a crosswalk, she said.

"While he was standing in the left turn lane he was struck by a pickup truck and killed. The area is very dark," Cutler noted.

The pickup driver remained on scene and cooperated with police. There was no indication of impairment on the part of the driver who was not cited or arrested, Cutler said. The name of the deceased man was not released pending notification of family members.

Cutler said there is a sign near where the victim was hit advising pedestrians to use the nearest crosswalk. Weather was also not a factor in the crash, she said.

"The biggest factor was a person crossing the street in the dark," Cutler said of the tragic incident.
