SALT LAKE CITY — Michael Aaron Jayne, age 43, is accused of smashing some type of liquid through a small opening in a closed jail door, targeting an officer. Jayne is accused of killing Santaquin police Sgt. Bill Hooser on Interstate 15 in May 2024. He was reportedly behind the wheel of a semitruck that hit Hooser.

After his capture, Jayne was charged with nine felonies, including aggravated murder. Jayne is being held in the Canyons location of Utah County Jail in a capital case. According to police documents, on Nov. 10, Jayne was seen on video "propell(ing) an unknown liquid through a closed door at a uniformed Utah County Sheriff Deputy." Based on video from inside the jail cell, which police reference in their charging document, the deputy is seen entering the housing unit where Jayne is incarcerated for a headcount. Jayne can reportedly be seen watching the officer, and then "pushes something in the corner of the door." At that point, police said the deputy wiped their face and called for help. Police believe that Jayne's alleged action was planned. He has other pending charges of aggravated assault and assault on deputies at the Utah County Jail stemming from a July 2025 interaction in an interrogation room at the jail, where multiple officers were injured.
