LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Logan police will begin giving tickets to drivers who park in front yards and in park strips.

City officials say it will begin an unprecedented effort to clean up many of Logan's neighborhoods.

The policy banning parked cars in front yards isn't new, but it's largely been ignored. Beginning May 2008, that will change.

Citywide, about 2,000 homes that people rent use a system where vehicles park in city rights of way or on front yards. City officials say that's driving away prospective home buyers that officials say are key to keeping Logan's neighborhoods healthy.

A memo detailing the city's plans was sent to every resident earlier this month with their utility bills. Officials say they want to leave plenty of time for property owners to get into compliance before enforcement efforts begin.
