Randall Jeppesen reporting The residents of Gunnison are still deciding what actions to take because of a gas station leak causing problems all over town. Now a Lehi man says a simple sensor he's created could prevent this type of thing from happening again.
Mark Ellis works on environmental cleanups, and after seeing all kinds of problems--like what Gunnison is facing--from fuel leaks, he decided to do something about it.
The result is a brick-sized, underground sensor device. As soon as it senses a fuel leak, it sends out alerts letting everyone know what's going on. "Both to the cleanup system and to the owner, the consultant and the state," Ellis said.
The sensor can be hooked up to a number of automatic cleanup systems so the fuel won't spread. Ellis says his sensors will likely cost around $3,000, which he says is nothing compared the likely over $1 million mess the people of Gunnison now face.
