(KSL News) A bill requiring public employers to join in the fight against identity theft has passed the Utah House.
The bill would make it mandatory that all public employers, such as the state and schools, verify the Social Security numbers of employees using the federal E-Verify program.
Bill sponsor Rep. Glenn Donnelson says this will alert employers to when a Social Security number is being used falsely, possibly by someone trying to avoid paying child support or criminal charges.
Donnelson did not talk about the bill's impact in identifying illegal immigrants.
